Diamond Jubilee Honour for W Bro Eric Dyson

A truly memorable and uplifting evening was enjoyed by all in attendance as W Bro Eric Dyson was presented with a prestigious 60‑year certificate, marking six decades of dedicated service to Freemasonry.

The presentation was made by the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro M K Whitely PSGD, accompanied by W Bro Gary Curly PAGDC who led the ceremony with warmth, dignity, and genuine affection. In a fitting tribute to such a remarkable Masonic journey, W Bro Whitely took the gavel and, in a moment of great significance, promoted W Bro Dyson on the floor to the rank of Past Provincial Grand Registrar (PPGReg). He described the promotion as thoroughly deserved, recognising Eric as a Mason who is deeply loved and respected, not only within the Lodge of Friendship No. 750, but across the Province of Yorkshire, West Riding.

W Bro Whitely went on to deliver a personal message from the Provincial Grand Master, recalling the fond memories shared with W Bro Dyson from earlier years. He spoke warmly of the PGM’s frequent visits to the Lodge of Friendship when the PGM was a younger Mason, often accompanying his wife’s late uncle, W Bro Irvine Broadbent, memories which added a deeply personal and nostalgic touch to the evening.

The celebration was witnessed by a distinguished gathering, including the brethren of the Lodge of Friendship No. 750, members of the COPPS, and W Bro Dyson’s family, whose steadfast support over the years has undoubtedly contributed to his remarkable Masonic career.

Adding humour and heartfelt reflection to the proceedings, W Bro Dyson himself addressed the Lodge, recounting a number of moving and amusing stories from his many years in Freemasonry. Among these was a memorable tale involving an attempt by a former Prime Minister to prevent him from working — an attempt which, he wryly observed, was unsuccessful — before remarking, to much laughter, that Mrs Margaret Dyson ultimately proved rather more effective in ensuring he did not return to work. The address perfectly reflected Eric’s warmth, wit, and humility, and was received with great affection by all present.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of pride, admiration, and genuine warmth, as brethren and guests alike reflected on W Bro Dyson’s unwavering dedication, friendship, and service over an incredible sixty years.

This Diamond Jubilee milestone stands not only as a celebration of an exceptional Masonic career, but also as an inspiration to all who have the privilege of following in his footsteps.
